What this drill fixes

Controlling trajectory — keeping it low into the wind, landing it high and stopping it quickly, or punching it out of trouble — opens up options on every hole. Shot height control drills like this one train you to alter ball flight on demand, so conditions and pin positions stop dictating your game. Part of TeeBetter's Shot Height Control training.

COACH TIPS

The biggest determining factor of height is dynamic loft through impact and the relationship between this and angle of attack.

  • Lower flight = ball back in stance, square clubface, hands forward, shorter swing and follow-through
  • Higher flight = slightly more open clubface, lower/neutral hands, less shaft lean and softer landing intent
  • Strike quality matters more than trying to “help” the ball in the air
  • Skilled players control trajectory first — distance becomes easier

Common questions about Shot Height Control drills

How do I hit the ball lower into the wind?

Ball flight is controlled by loft, angle of attack, and spin rate. To hit it lower, play the ball back in your stance, use more club, and make a three-quarter swing — or work on your angle of attack so you're delivering less loft at impact. Shot height control drills train you to alter trajectory deliberately so wind conditions stop costing you control.

How do I hit the ball higher to stop it quickly?

Higher shots with more spin come from a steeper angle of attack and proper wrist conditions at impact. Shot height control drills build awareness of how your setup and swing affect trajectory so you can add height on demand — and use it to attack tucked pins or carry obstacles on the course.
